Sulfonated asphalt is an anionic asphalt modified product made by sulfonating asphalt (usually petroleum asphalt). It is a water-soluble asphalt derivative and a multifunctional organic drilling fluid treatment agent.

TOPLUS^®  Sulfonated asphalt is widely used, primarily as a high-performance additive in drilling fluids in the oil industry. Sulfonated Asphalt as a drilling fluid additive, it can prevent collapse, plug leaks, lubricate and reduce drag, and reduce high temperature and high pressure fluid loss. It can use to prepare asphalt mixtures to improve road durability and water resistance. Sulfonated asphalt can improve mud cake quality and enhance the waterproof performance of well wall or road surface.  In oil drilling, sulfonated asphalt is a highly effective shale inhibitor and plugging agent.
