Nickel Hydroxide is primarily used as the active cathode material in batteries, particularly in alkaline secondary battery systems such as nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride batteries. Its core characteristic lies in its unique redox electrochemical behavior: during charging, the divalent nickel in Ni(OH)₂ is oxidized to trivalent nickel, forming nickel oxyhydroxide (NiOOH) and releasing electrons; during discharging, a reversible reduction occurs. This reaction exhibits high reversibility and stability in alkaline electrolytes, giving the battery good cycle life. Based on these characteristics, nickel hydroxide is mainly used as the positive electrode material in nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride batteries. The latter, when paired with a hydrogen storage alloy anode, achieves higher energy density and environmental friendliness, and was widely used in early portable electronic products, power tools, and hybrid vehicles.
